How to Protect Your Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor Furniture is one of the things you can put up on your patio so you can have a place to relax and unwind after a long day. It serves as a gathering place where families spend the time to share intimate moments and social interactions that money can’t buy. Setting up, beautification, and maintenance of outdoor furniture requires a lot of money. It is considered as a luxury at home, but if it purposely serves as a haven for a family, money does not matter anymore.
Time flies and seasons after seasons come along. As season changes, we also need to give attention to our outdoor furniture’ regular maintenance. Rain or shine, it needs some grooming. It is an investment which you need to protect as well. Over time, it could accumulate dirt and rust if not maintained properly
Sunday mornings are for family, and outdoor meals are the best. You get to enjoy the free time of spending on bbq parties with your loved ones. There are times, it feels good to walk outside on morning and sit on your outdoor furniture meditating and just feeling the cold breeze of morning dew. But when you sit on your cushion, it’s wet and a little bit rusty.
Worry no more because there are various ways on how you can protect your outdoor furniture.
Wood Furniture Treatment
You may clean your wood furniture by using soap and warm water. Make sure that it is in good condition before cleaning as your effort might go to waste because of decays inside the wood.
Before you clean your wood furniture, make sure that you have removed the cushion or padding. With soap and water, you may use a scrub brush in cleaning the wood. And after that, let it dry.
The process does not only end it simply brushing it with detergent and letting it dry. To prolong its life and make it look like new as always, you have to paint it with a furniture protector. Re-painting your furniture is a wise decision. Paint pigment protects the wood from the sun’s UV rays and rain as well.
You can have it also applied with water repellant to avoid water from soaking in the wood. It helps to maintain the wood’s aesthetic beauty.
Metal Furniture Treatment
Your outdoor metal furniture is prone to rusts. Just like the wood, you can clean it with a sponge or brush with a cleaning solution. Tough stains can be removed with a spare toothbrush.
The rusts, however, can be removed with a wire brush. After removing the stains, you may paint it with a furniture protector and let it dry. Afterwards, you may now put it with a metal furniture paint to protect it from UV rays and excessive heat.
Protecting The Cushions
The cushion gives a comfortable feeling to a person sitting on it. Its softness provides relaxation, perfect for a “just chilling” outdoor stay. But then, cushions are prone to clouds of dust and has to be properly maintained to prolong the beauty of the fabric.
For cushions that have removable fabric, follow the instructions from the manufacturer before tossing it on the washing machine. Let it completely dry before putting it back on the cushion.
Moreover, for those cushions with non-removable fabric, you may opt to clean it with a laundry soap, warm water, and a brush. Then, rinse the upholstery with a hose or a damp towel. Just like clothes, you have to let it completely dry, because if not, it might cause a bad odor on the fabric or worst, develop fungus.
Maintenance is one thing, and prevention is another. Outdoor furniture is most often used for rare occasions and usually on weekends. In order to protect your outdoor decors, you may use furniture covers which can withstand extreme heat, strong wind, or heavy downpour of rain.
Typical protective covers are made of vinyl, polyester, and canvas. You should first consider the exact size of the furniture for good fitting. It is best to cover the furniture with a cord, strap, or cinder blocks to prevent the protective cover from tearing apart caused by strong wind.
Protecting your outdoor furniture from different elements is an effort but the thing it provides for the family bonding is priceless. The process is not workable day by day, but maybe twice a year.
